Rewarding your agents at Christmas

Tis the season to be jolly! But are all our employees are feeling the festive cheer? Back office staff often enjoy time out to hang Christmas decorations, gather for snacks of mince pies and gingerbread and discuss plans for the holiday season. In many contact centres, this relaxed joviality in the run up to Christmas is not applicable to agents as their workload increases and stress levels can run high.

As customer service agents are on the front line of our businesses, shouldn’t we be ensuring that they too are getting into the festive spirit? After all, a motivated and enthusiastic workforce is fundamental to the success of a business. Here are some simple and economical ways in which we can ensure that all our employees feel valued and happy in the run up to, and during, the Christmas period.

Organise time for small teams of agents to decorate the contact centre. Or perhaps they could each decorate their individual workspaces. Putting up colourful decorations will create a fun setting for your agents to spend their working day in and hanging decorations together will promote some team spirit.

Music in the break out room

How about having some Christmas jingles playing in the staff room? This is a sure fire way to get agents in the festive spirit and create a Christmassy buzz which will reflect in their conversations with callers.

Christmas themed snacks

Mince pies, gingerbread, candy canes, satsumas, chestnuts. We all have our favourite indulgence at Christmas time, so why not treat your agents to a mid-shift snack. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but will be much appreciated by your staff. Our tradition at IPPlus is a cheese terrine, courtesy of our CTO’s wife. Here is a rare picture of the highly anticipated delicacy; as once announced, it survives mere minutes before demolition.

Christmas Party

Our office party is, as are most, the highlight of the social calendar. Months of planning go into the event and this is a great way to get your agents and back office staff working together where they may not otherwise have the opportunity to. Having a ‘bit of a do’ outside of the office environment is a healthy way for employees to let their hair down and mix with their colleagues and senior members of staff. This bonding experience continues into the New Year and can really help to strengthen relationships within the business to create a happy workforce. At the IPPlus Christmas party, we present some in-house awards to recognise the achievements of employees throughout the year.

Other ideas to keep your staff’s spirits high over the Christmas season:

Secret Santa

Buying cheap presents for an anonymous colleague has now embedded itself as a tradition in the workplace, often with hilarious results.

Christmas Jumper Dress Down

If you have dress down days, why not make it a Christmas Jumper theme? Create some competition with a prize for the best jumper voted for by the employees

Christmas Raffle

Organise a raffle just after Christmas to which people can donate their unwanted Christmas gifts. Donate cash from ticket sales to a local charity. This is an excellent way to extend the Christmas spirit and give to a worthy cause.

The most important thing for all staff is to ensure they feel valued and part of the team. Not just at Christmas time, but throughout the year. So make sure you thank your team members. A little word, that means so much.

Merry Christmas everyone!!
